Republicans on Torture: Still OK

Read this post from NRO. Andy McCarthy, pundit-extrordinaire, makes the argument that McCain is flip-flopping when he recently said:

"...people I respect will tell you that if you inflect enough physical pain on someone, they will tell you anything they think you want to know in order to relieve that pain. That's just a fundamental fact. And we've gotten a huge amount of misinformation as well as other information from these techniques."

The flip-flop is evident when compared to his 2005 stance:

"In such an urgent and rare instance, an interrogator might well try extreme measures to extract information that could save lives. Should he do so, and thereby save an American city or prevent another 9/11, authorities and the public would surely take this into account when judging his actions and recognize the extremely dire situation which he confronted. But I don't believe this scenario requires us to write into law an exception to our treaty and moral obligations that would permit cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment."

Not sure what the last part of this means, but it seems that McCain may have been trying to appeal to certian sections of his voting base, as well as the prevailing sentiment at the time. Not sure, but I hope that a man who spent time in a Vietnamese tiger cage doesn't really think that torture is the answer.

More republican pundits support torture here.
