Goldberg Gaffes (Surprised?)

You'll have to excuse me if I get some guilty pleasure out of the following incident. My good friend Jonah Goldberg, in giving a speech at the Heritage Foundation (right-wing think tank), said the following:

To sort of start the story, the reason why we see fascism as a thing of the right is because fascism was originally a form of right-wing socialism. Mussolini was born a socialist, he died a socialist, he never abandoned his love of socialism, he was one of the most important socialist intellectuals in Europe and was one of the most important socialist activists in Italy, and the only reason he got dubbed a fascist and therefore a right-winger is because he supported World War I.

Now, this incredibly stupid comment is shown to be false because Mussolini was, you know, the FOUNDER of the Fascist Party. That kinda makes him a Fascist, right? If you're still in doubt, check out Benito's stuff:

Granted that the 19th century was the century of socialism, liberalism, democracy, this does not mean that the 20th century must also be the century of socialism, liberalism, democracy. Political doctrines pass; nations remain. We are free to believe that this is the century of authority, a century tending to the “right”, a Fascist century.

Seems pretty clear - and it should be, especially to a person who is supposedly writing a book on Fascism. Research must not be one of Goldberg's strong points.

This silliness has been pointed out in several places, like here and here. But the best part (by far) is Goldberg's response. Jonah, who makes a living by jumping all over similar mistakes by his opponents, had this to say:

Any fair minded person would agree that I simply misspoke. Instead these bandersnatches ignore the rest of the entire speech and focus on this unfortunate but entirely innocuous flub as “proof” of my total and complete ignorance and dishonesty.

LOL! "Bannersnatchers"? You mean people like yourself, Jonah?
