Our government has found a way to reduce the number of casualties that our troops endure in Iraq - They are sending private contractors to do the dying instead.
I watched this PBS Frontline documentary last night, and it talks at length about the concerns attached to the current use of private contractors in the war in Iraq. Of particular concern is the use of contractors to do soldier's jobs - convoy protection, etc. There are several contracts discussed in the documentary, which are convoluted and secret. They all seem to have one thing in common, though - Haliburton. There are many sub-contracts, subsidiaries, and other loopholes, but Haliburton seems to have their hands in a lot of the places that the documentary examined. There have been billions of dollars paid to Haliburton, and the accounting for the billing of those funds has drawn substantial criticism. With a few exceptions, there has not been a significant governmental investigation into this phenomenon. Isn't that strange? I wonder why...
