Viva la Wiki!

Some smart friends of mine have been wondering why, given its constant flux and aptitude for inaccuracy, this blog so frequently links to Wikipedia. While I understand the criticism, and would never allow my students to use Wiki as an academic source, generally speaking, I'm behind Wiki full throttle.

I'm not sure what Karl thinks, but I see Wikipedia as the manifestation of everything freedom-inducing and progressive about the internet. It has something of the spirit of Diderot's revolutionary Encyclopedie , only even more irreverent in it's democratization of knowledge and more threatening because the knowledge being democratized isn't generated top-down by the professorial custodians of official wisdom, but rather flows organically in all directions across the bottom, inviting participation and turning every interested reader into something many would have thought they'd never become--a part of the discussion.
